St Brigid’s Day

St. Brigid’s Day was the first day of Spring in the Gaelic Calendar, known as Imbolc in ancient times, bringing with it hope of longer days having left the darkness of winter behind.

It was also the beginning of the tillage season where the spade would break the soil as a symbol of growth for the year ahead. It’s the St. Brigid’s cross made with rushes/reeds that many of us associate with St. Brigid.
